Australian Catholic University has strengthened its international education partnerships with the launch of a new Global STEM Education Centre in collaboration with Christ University in India.
Based at Christ University’s central campus in Bangalore, the transnational hub aims to drive innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education while tackling real-world challenges faced by educators and learners in both countries. A key focus of the Centre will be breaking down barriers to STEM participation, particularly for girls and women.
The Centre was officially launched this month by ACU Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Julie Cogin alongside Christ University Vice Chancellor Dr Fr Joseph C C.
Professor Cogin said the partnership reflected a shared commitment to equity and excellence in education.
“This partnership is grounded in a common mission and inspired by our commitment to shaping a better future through education,” she said. “At a time when science and technology shape the world at an unprecedented pace, strengthening STEM education is an investment in human flourishing.”
The initiative was spearheaded by ACU education lecturer Dr Sindu George, who spent time at Christ University as a Scholar-in-Residence in 2023. The Global STEM Education Centre will support joint research projects, academic exchange programs, professional learning workshops and collaborations with industry.
Dr George said the Centre would focus on innovative digital tools and inclusive teaching strategies to support diverse learners.
“We’re aiming to produce research outcomes that advance academic knowledge and translate that into practical improvements in classrooms,” she said. “This ensures teachers can connect classroom learning with the skills and capabilities the next generation will need to thrive.”
As part of the partnership, ACU is offering two Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarships for candidates from Christ University to undertake doctoral research in STEM education. Successful recipients will be formally affiliated with the Global STEM Education Centre.
ACU and Christ University share a long history of collaboration and are both recognised for their leadership in education and research. As Australia’s largest provider of teacher education, ACU has developed a range of outreach programs to support underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
At Christ University, the new Centre will work alongside established initiatives such as the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, the Neuro Diversity Lab and the Centre for Social Action, creating opportunities for meaningful impact at local, national and international levels.
The Global STEM Education Centre represents a significant step forward in strengthening global collaboration and promoting more inclusive, future-focused STEM education.
