The APAIE conference was held in Perth last week, and it was a success!
The Koala spoke with Louise Kinnaird from APAIE regarding the week. The take outs are as follows.
Sustainability permeated across all parts of the event, highlighted by the keynote, Michael Wear. Michael demonstrating how we are all custodians of Earth. The breakfast session with WA’s Chief Scientist, Prof Klinken, also demonstrating the need to take Indigenous perspectives into account when applying a scientific approach to green energy and beyond.
The international student journey: the first student panel plenary session at an APAIE conference – it is always good to hear and take into account the students’ perspectives, it is so important.
The Opening Ceremony with the Indigenous Welcome to Country, the keynote, and the most entertaining The Hon David Templeman Dip Tchg BEd MLA, Western Australian Minister for Culture and the Arts; Sport and Recreation; International Education and Heritage – he was a delight. It resonated with people, bringing some to tears, followed by the opposite extreme of tears of laughter from the Minister’s performance! The Koala can test living next to the Minister’s electorate.
Overall, the feedback was what a relaxed vibe there was (as opposed to the sometimes frenetic energy of these events). That had much to do with the location and locals establishing a relaxed and welcoming tone from the outset.
The Regional Update for India and Australia was standing room only.
A few stats: 2,082 delegates from 65 countries/regions, and 2,280 gelatos consumed! Thanks Duolingo!
