Australia’s international graduates are proving the long-term value of their education, with the Australian High Commission in Canada recently hosting a celebration in Toronto of alumni who studied at Australian universities and have since gone on to successful global careers.
More than 70 professionals came together on 9 September 2025, representing 12 Australian universities and diverse industries including medicine, law, business, engineering, science, and the arts. The event, held in partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner of Australia to Canada, highlighted the skills, global outlook, and leadership qualities that international students gain through studying in Australia.
Her Excellency Kate Logan, Australia’s High Commissioner to Canada and a University of Melbourne and ANU graduate, spoke about the role education plays in building strong bilateral relations. She noted that international alumni are ambassadors for both nations, creating lasting connections that strengthen trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
Also in attendance were Fiona Toohey, Second Secretary at the High Commission in Ottawa and UQ alumna, and Shelley Jackson, Australia’s new Consul General (Trade & Investment) in Toronto, who studied at Griffith and Melbourne. Both showcased how international education fosters global careers while maintaining lifelong ties to Australia.
The event, aligned with the Toronto International Film Festival, was the first major alumni gathering since the pandemic and demonstrated the unique benefits international students bring home after their studies—new skills, confidence, and networks that contribute to their local communities and international partnerships.
The Koala understands plans are now underway to expand the alumni celebration to Vancouver, reinforcing the impact of Australia’s international education as a driver of global connections.
