Curtin University has launched a new free credential designed to inspire the next generation of leaders by exploring the vision and values of one of Australia’s most revered prime ministers — the Rt Hon. John Curtin.
The 20-hour online course, John Curtin’s Vision: Legacy and Leadership, delves into Curtin’s wartime leadership, his approach to governance, and the lasting influence of his principles on modern Australia. Developed by the Faculty of Humanities, the program reflects Curtin’s commitment to courage, clarity, and service — qualities that remain deeply relevant for leaders today.
Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the initiative was created to support leadership growth across industries.
“This Curtin initiative is about more than history; it’s about inspiring future leaders through the lens of one of the nation’s most influential figures,” Professor Hayne said. “John Curtin’s leadership during one of Australia’s most challenging periods offers timeless lessons in resilience and vision.”
Designed for professionals across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the course offers practical leadership insights alongside historical learning. It also appeals to history enthusiasts, educators, and journalists seeking to understand how strong, values-based leadership can shape national identity.
Historian Dr André Brett from Curtin’s School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry said the course links Curtin’s example to modern leadership challenges.
“By revisiting Curtin’s political ascent and his leadership during wartime, we gain insights into the kind of courage and clarity needed in today’s world,” Dr Brett said. “Curtin confronted uncertainty with ambition and determination. To study him is to understand the making of modern Australia — and how it is continually being remade.”
The course is open to Curtin students, staff, alumni and the public. Participants can choose to complete an optional 10-hour formal assessment for a small fee, earning Curtin credit points and a digital credential.
In honouring John Curtin’s legacy, Curtin University has created more than a history course — it has built a contemporary platform for leadership reflection, resilience, and renewal.
