SUMMARY:Enhancing wellbeing for international students and the staff who support them – what is working and for who?
DESCRIPTION:Mental health concerns are on the rise in Australia\, however to date\, there has been little research or attention on ways to support educators and their students in tertiary settings. This session will present the findings of a recent study on improving educator readiness to support student mental health\, with a focus on strategies and mechanisms that can support international students\, and the staff who support them. \nPresenter \nAna Dabrowski\, BEd Southern Cross\, CELTA Cambridge\, GCER Melb\, CCPT Duke\, MAAL  New England\, MTESOL\, MEd\, PhD Melb \nDr Anna Dabrowski is a Senior Research Fellow in Education and Development at the Australian Council for Educational Research. Her research interests include staff and student mental health\, international education policy\, and gender and social inclusion. Whether you work with international students\, multicultural teams\, or global communities\, this session will empower you to build stronger connections and drive meaningful engagement across cultures. \nPresenter \nPiotr Jusik\, I FLOW COACHING \nI am a therapeutic counsellor\, coach\, group facilitator\, supervisor and trainer educated in the modality of transactional analysis\, assisting adults and young people with various mental health challenges. Having worked both in private practice and in the UK National Health System\, I have successfully helped my clients struggling with depression\, anxiety\, relationship problems\, stress\, changing jobs\, moving to a new country as well as facing anger problems\, loneliness and low self-esteem. \nI have a wealth of experience both professionally and personally\, which allows me to have empathy and provide the tools to support you as you work through what is painful\, so that you can find your untapped skills and abilities which will ultimately help you move into a happier mindset. \nAs a fluent speaker of English\, Polish\, Spanish and French\, I support a diverse range of international clients. I have been working globally with individuals and groups since 2011. This is long enough to realise that people around the world need belonging and engagement to be truly well. Your culture will influence how these get met\, and that’s what I specialise in. \nI would like the world to be a better place for all of us – that is my purpose in life. \nYes\, I have many letters behind my name\, but what really matters if I am fully present\, aware\, focused and compassionate to assist people like you to feel better\, grow and develop in your own way. I offer coaching and counselling both online and face to face. \nI love travelling off the beaten track\, studying languages and psychology\, cycling and cooking.

SUMMARY:Foundations of Student Advising
DESCRIPTION:This session will look at the foundations of what it is to be an ISA\, effective management for international student advising\, meeting the requirements of institution\, government and visa – why it’s needed by institutions and what it encompasses for the ISA\, the institution\, and the students. \nIt will then look similarly at risk in this space; why risk management is an essential element of good practice in international student advising\, how to apply it and what it means for the institution\, the advisor\, and the student. \nPresenter \nDesma Smith \nDesma is the Associate Director\, International Student Advisory and Support at Swinburne. \nWith over 22 years in International Education working at Canadian High Commission; DIAC student policy; global mobility; student support; Desma has facilitated workshops and written submissions for ISANA; Government roundtables; consultative stages of policy development; created policies in HEd; had various consultant roles and tutored critical incident management. \nDesma has been Subject Matter Expert on award winning teams managing risk and safe communities and a member of Swinburne’s Incident Management Team. In 2021\, a Swinburne led consortium won a Best Practice award in the IEAA Excellence Awards for their Food Delivery Driver Training program. \nDesma offsets work tensions as an obsessed dragon boat racer and successfully competed internationally in the Australian Auroras DBS (dragon boat squad) over 6 years. \n
