Students at Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila are getting a head start on their global career aspirations thanks to the AI-powered English test, Envoy. Nearly half of the university’s first year student population has already taken the next-generation language assessment, marking a significant step forward in the university’s rollout of the technology.
Developed by international education provider IDP Education, Envoy combines expert linguistic design with advanced artificial intelligence to deliver personalised, real-time insights into students’ English proficiency, with results available in just two hours.
Irish Sherina Digo, a faculty member at FEU, said the introduction of Envoy is about helping students prepare for international futures. “Eighty-six per cent of our students dream of living and working overseas,” she said. “With Envoy, we can accelerate their English proficiency in a way that’s efficient, accurate and tailored to their needs.”
Unlike traditional multiple-choice tests, Envoy presents open-ended, real-life communication tasks and uses AI to assess various aspects of language ability. This adaptive approach provides both students and educators with meaningful, personalised feedback they can use to improve learning outcomes.
Kim Dienhoff, IDP’s Director of English Language Testing, said the rollout at FEU demonstrates the potential of combining technology and education to empower students. “Envoy adapts to each learner’s level and gives educators data they can use to fine-tune teaching strategies,” she said. “It’s all about making English language learning more targeted, effective and relevant.”
The test’s success at FEU represents a broader shift in how institutions across the globe are using digital tools to meet the evolving needs of international education.
