The Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, left yesterday for a trade mission to India, including “seizing opportunities in international education”, he said on departure from Australia.
“India is already the largest source of international students for us, and the opening of the new Adelaide University next year offers a valuable chance to attract even more students, providing a significant boost to our economy, community, and workforce”, Malinauskas said.
In 2024, India was the largest source market of international students to South Australia for both international student enrolments and commencements, followed by China. Most enrolments from India were in higher education (8176), followed closely by vocational education and training (7968).
However, there were more Indian student commencements in VET in 2024 (4183), followed by higher education (3170). (Data source: Department of Education international student data, pivot table).
Premier Malinauskas has been critical of the Federal Labor Party’s plan to introduce student caps, calling it “bad policy that will harm the national economy, kill research and development and undermine the AUKUS deal” in December last year.
During his visit, the Premier will also be exploring the possibility of direct flights between Adelaide and India.
