Torrens University Australia has announced the appointment of Professor Aleksandar Subic as its new Vice-Chancellor and President, commencing April 2026 — a move that signals a new era of ambitious leadership and global engagement for the institution.
Professor Subic joins Torrens from Aston University (UK), where he currently serves as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure, Aston underwent a major transformation — achieving Triple Gold status in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework, climbing 165 places in global rankings, and being recognised four years running as the second-ranked UK university for social mobility by the Higher Education Policy Institute.
A globally recognised figure in higher education leadership and innovation ecosystems, Professor Subic has previously held senior executive roles at RMIT University and Swinburne University of Technology, where he led pioneering initiatives in digital learning, industry collaboration, and applied research.
Ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists (Stanford/Elsevier) and recipient of the Global Competitiveness Award for Transformational Leadership in Higher Education (2024), Professor Subic also serves as Chair of both the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils University Leadership and Research Forum and the 4th Generation Universities (4GU) global community.
“Torrens University is a vibrant and innovative institution with a strong social purpose and entrepreneurial spirit,” Professor Subic said. “I am excited to lead Torrens into its next chapter — expanding global reach, enhancing digital and industry-integrated learning and applied research, and positioning Torrens as a model for inclusive, future-ready education.”
Torrens University Chancellor Michael Thawley AO said the appointment marks an “exciting new phase” in the university’s evolution.
“Professor Subic brings exceptional leadership, global experience, and a bold vision for innovation and impact,” Mr Thawley said. “He has had remarkable success in lifting graduation rates and improving the career success of students. His appointment underscores Torrens University’s commitment to shaping the future of education in Australia and globally.”
Mr Thawley also paid tribute to current Vice-Chancellor Professor Alwyn Louw, who will step down in 2026 after six years of transformative leadership.
“Professor Louw has played a pivotal role in transforming a fledgling university into the well-established and respected organisation Torrens University is today.”
Torrens University also announced two new appointments to its Governing Board, reflecting a continued investment in strategic leadership:
- Emeritus Professor Isabella Caroline McMillen AO, former Chief Scientist for South Australia and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, brings extensive experience in research leadership, science policy, and higher-education governance.
- Mark Baillie, a seasoned global investment professional and Distinguished Fellow of the United States Studies Centre, adds more than 40 years of expertise in finance and institutional partnerships.
The University also acknowledged the departure of former CEO Linda Brown from the Board after almost 13 years of service, recognising her “tremendous contribution” to Torrens’ growth and global reputation.
With Professor Subic’s appointment, Torrens University reinforces its position as one of Australia’s most agile and purpose-driven higher-education institutions. His global outlook, commitment to innovation, and emphasis on social impact align closely with Torrens’ vision — to transform lives through education that is inclusive, future-focused, and deeply connected to industry and community.
