CANIE: Climate Action Network for International Educators has become an officially recognised sustainability group in the QS World University Rankings, with the CANIE Accord now included in the QS rankings methodology.

In recognising CANIE within its Sustainability Ranking and World University Ranking, universities are being encouraged by QS to consider the carbon impact of their international education mission, and publicly commit to act specific initiatives within their universities to educate, advocate and act to create change.

The CANIE Accord is both a public commitment and a menu of practical actions designed to guide the international education sector’s response to the climate crisis, with more than 80 organisations worldwide currently holding signatory status.

Ainslie Moore, President, CANIE Global Board, said “we are delighted that QS recognises the value of this work and hope this new partnership will encourage more universities globally to prioritise sustainable efforts within their international education agenda”.

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability measures an institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges. The University of Toronto topped the 2024 Sustainability Rankings (TKN 051223), with two Australian universities – The University of Sydney (#7) and The University of Melbourne (#9) – ranked in the top ten.

“Partnering with CANIE underscores our dedication to incorporating climate action within the assessment frameworks of higher education. This collaboration not only encourages but also supports universities globally in integrating essential sustainability practices into their core institutional strategies,” said Leigh Kamolins, Director of Analytics and Evaluation, QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

CANIE is a global network of educators and professionals committed to addressing climate change through education, advocacy, and action. Find out more about CANIE and the CANIE Accord here.
