Cricket gives UC another way into India’s international student market

Cricket gives UC another way into India’s international student market

The University of Canberra is using one of India’s great sporting passions to build something that extends well beyond the boundary rope.

The third edition of the University of Canberra Cricket Challenge has wrapped up in Bengaluru, bringing together 24 Under 16 school teams and more than 300 young cricketers and support staff from across India.

Held from 30 August to 4 September at Jain International Residential School, the tournament brought together 16 boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams from schools in Bengaluru, Ajmer, Kolar, Coimbatore and Indore.

But cricket was only part of the proposition.

Alongside the competition, students took part in coaching masterclasses, talent development activities and information sessions about studying in Australia, giving UC an opportunity to introduce international education pathways to students and their families in a setting that was considerably less transactional than the traditional recruitment fair.

That is perhaps the more interesting part of the initiative.

International education recruitment is increasingly about building relationships well before a student is ready to submit an application. For universities, particularly in established markets such as India, finding ways to engage prospective students through their interests and communities can provide a different route into the conversation.

Sport is an obvious vehicle in a cricket-mad country, but the strategy is broader than simply putting a university logo on a cricket tournament. UC is connecting sporting development, education, scholarships, work integrated learning and coach development as part of a longer-term engagement with India.

The 2026 tournament also shifted to a T20 format, giving the young players more opportunities to develop their skills while adding another layer of energy to the competition.

UC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Bill Shorten said the tournament demonstrated the university’s commitment to creating pathways where sporting and academic ambitions could develop alongside each other.

“Students are able to see how sport and education can open doors to a global future,” Professor Shorten said.

There is a useful lesson here for the broader international education sector.

Universities often talk about differentiation in increasingly crowded recruitment markets. Yet differentiation does not always have to come from another scholarship, another agent campaign or another glossy prospectus.

Sometimes it is about finding something the university can genuinely contribute to a community and then building a relationship around it.

The UC Cricket Challenge appears to be doing just that.

The tournament attracted an estimated online audience of more than 30,000 viewers through live-streamed matches, extending its reach beyond the schools and players involved.

For Cricket ACT, the partnership also demonstrates how sport can become a mechanism for international engagement.

“The UC Cricket Challenge demonstrates how cricket can bring communities together while creating opportunities for young people to develop both on and off the field,” Cricket ACT CEO Anthony Ilott said.

And the relationship is not staying in India.

The next stage of the UC Cup will take place in Canberra from 30 September to 2 October, when Indian teams will compete against Australian schools and experience Canberra’s sporting and education environment firsthand.

That creates a particularly interesting two-way pathway.

The Indian leg gives UC an opportunity to introduce itself to prospective students in their own environment. The Canberra leg then brings some of those students into Australia, where they can experience the university, city and broader student environment for themselves.

That is a very different proposition from simply telling prospective students what studying in Australia is like.

UC’s broader India engagement includes academic scholarships, Work Integrated Learning opportunities and coach development programs, all designed to build longer-term connections between the two countries.

The university will no doubt be hoping some of those connections eventually translate into enrolments.

But there is a bigger opportunity here. If international education is ultimately about relationships, universities do not necessarily need to start the relationship by talking about international education.

Sometimes, you start with cricket.
