The Good Country Index results are in and make for consideration over the festive season

Simon Anholt, former AIEC and EAIE keynote speaker and publisher of the Good Country Index (GCI) has released the latest results (version 1.6) late last week.

The GCI measures how successfully countries balance their domestic and international responsibilities: doing the right thing for their own people and territory while also contributing meaningfully to the rest of humanity and the whole planet.

Smaller EU countries of Slovenia, Estonia and Czechia have risen into the top 12 countries, suggesting they could be leading global perceptions of multilateralism and responsible governance.

For local subscribers of the Koala, Australia slipped 1 place to 19th out of 169 countries surveyed, while NZ dropped 5 places to 24th.

Australia lost ground on the dimensions of: World Order from 1st to 8th, International Peace & Security 54th to 59th, although this was partially offset by improvement in Planet & Climate 16th to 4th and Prosperity & Equity 65th to 53rd.

New Zealand went backwards on: Science & Technology 14th to 34th, International Peace & Security 17th to 38th.

With comparison to GDP per country (World Bank July 2023), Australia ranks 12th, indicating there is room for improvement to be more influential globally. A stable international education industry would be a a key driver.

NZ ranks 50th by GDP, so on these results is outperforming on the GCI.
