Universities Australia has opened entries for the 2026 Shaping Australia Awards, inviting nominations that showcase the people, programs and research helping to build a stronger future for the nation.
Now in its fourth year, the awards have become an important platform for highlighting the impact Australian universities have beyond the classroom. From pioneering medical discoveries and innovative teaching practices to community partnerships and industry collaboration, the awards recognise initiatives that are delivering tangible benefits across Australia.
The program comes at a time when universities are facing increasing scrutiny over their economic and social contribution. The awards provide an opportunity to demonstrate how higher education institutions are responding to national challenges, supporting workforce development and creating solutions that improve everyday lives.
Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said the awards celebrate the people whose work is helping shape the country’s future.
“Australia’s universities are home to some of the country’s best and brightest,” Mr Sheehy said.
“Every day, they are helping solve problems, create opportunities and improve lives right across Australia.
“These awards are about recognising those people and their work.”
Mr Sheehy noted that the quality of entries continues to rise each year, reflecting the growing influence universities are having across a range of sectors.
“Whether it’s lifting productivity, developing the skilled workforce our economy needs, advancing new discoveries or strengthening communities, universities are helping shape the nation we want to be,” he said.
The awards recognise achievement across three categories.
The Problem Solver Award celebrates research that transforms lives through practical outcomes and innovation.
The Future Builder Award acknowledges exceptional educators who are preparing the next generation of graduates and professionals.
The Community Champion Award recognises university-led initiatives that create positive change in local communities.
Each category will feature two winners, with one selected through a public vote and the other chosen by an independent panel of distinguished Australians.
The awards have increasingly become a showcase for the diverse ways universities contribute to society. While research breakthroughs often attract the headlines, community engagement projects, innovative teaching approaches and partnerships with industry are also playing a significant role in addressing Australia’s economic and social challenges.
Universities, staff, students and researchers are encouraged to submit nominations, with entries closing on 1 September 2026.
