Nominations have officially opened for the 2026 Study NT International Student Awards, with this year’s program marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its tenth anniversary.
The awards, which recognise the achievements and contributions of international students, alumni and employers across the Northern Territory, have become an important fixture in the Territory’s international education calendar. Nominations will remain open until 20 July, with winners to be announced later this year.
The Northern Territory Government says the awards highlight the valuable role international students play in local communities, workplaces and educational institutions. Beyond recognising academic excellence, the program acknowledges leadership, volunteering, community engagement and the support provided by employers who help students gain valuable workplace experience.
The awards come at a time when competition for international students is intensifying globally. As Australian jurisdictions seek to strengthen their appeal as study destinations, programs such as the Study NT Awards serve a dual purpose. They celebrate student success while also reinforcing the message that international students are welcomed and valued members of the community.
International education remains a significant contributor to the Northern Territory economy. It is currently the Territory’s sixth largest export industry and its second largest services export, supporting jobs, skills development and broader economic growth.
This year’s award categories include International Student of the Year, International Student Volunteer of the Year, International Alum of the Year and International Student Employer of the Year.
The awards ceremony will be held alongside the tenth annual Study NT Student Ambassador Graduation, which recognises the work of 20 student ambassadors who have spent the past year promoting the Northern Territory as a study destination to prospective students around the world.
Northern Territory Minister for International Education and Migration Robyn Cahill said international students were an essential part of the Territory’s future.
“International students are a critical part of the Northern Territory’s community, workforce and economy, and we want to see international student numbers grow,” she said.
“The Territory has a world class international education sector. These awards recognise the talent and dedication of our students and the employers who support them and celebrate the achievements and contributions they make in our local community.”
The emphasis on employers is particularly significant. Across Australia, governments and education providers are increasingly focused on improving student employability outcomes and strengthening pathways from study to work. Recognising employers who invest in international student talent highlights the role industry plays in attracting and retaining skilled graduates.
Among last year’s winners was 2025 International Student of the Year Gilbertofer Tanoto, who reflected on how studying in the Territory had shaped his personal and professional development.
“I came to the NT with a laptop and big dreams. Now I’m teaching, creating, capturing moments, inspiring others, and learning every day. The NT truly has a funny way of turning students into storytellers,” he said.
His story reflects a broader reality of international education. While students arrive seeking qualifications, many also develop careers, build networks and become ambassadors for the places where they study. Their experiences often influence future student recruitment through word of mouth and alumni connections long after graduation.
As the Territory looks to grow its international education sector, the Study NT International Student Awards continue to showcase the personal achievements and community contributions that help define the student experience.
