The CISWA 31st Annual Conference, held on November 1, 2024, at Murdoch University, focused on fostering a “Sense of Belonging” among international students in WA. Key sessions included talks from Hon. David Templeman, Minister for International Education, and Nilesh Makwana.
The event highlighted the critical role of international students in Western Australia’s economy—contributing $2.94 billion—and emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive, inclusive environment.
The morning sessions presented by Phil Honeywood and Derryn Belford offered updates on Australian and WA education landscapes.
StudyPerth highlighted its initiatives to support international students in Western Australia, aiming to create a welcoming and connected environment. Key activities include a welcome desk at Perth Airport, orientation support, cost-of-living assistance, and various cultural and employment-focused events. Dr. Siddier Chambers’ presentation discussed the concept of a “Sense of Belonging” among international students. It described belonging as a feeling of connectedness and support on campus, which impacts students’ academic and emotional well-being. The presentation outlined barriers to belonging, such as cultural shock, financial stress, and language challenges, while highlighting enablers like faculty relationships, peer support, and diverse campus communities. Dr. Chambers emphasized the need for institutions to actively promote inclusivity, address student isolation, and encourage connections to strengthen community integration in Western Australia.
Fremantle College and Como Secondary College shared unique approaches to welcoming international students. With programs in marine studies, contemporary music, and Aboriginal heritage, Fremantle College offers immersive experiences in Australian culture. Both schools highlighted the importance of cultural exchange, supportive homestays, and community connections. They also focused on guiding students in their transitions to university or TAFE through career planning and family involvement, helping international students navigate their academic and social journeys in WA.
The Student Support Panel, featuring staff from four institutions (University, TAFE and private RTO) discussed how a “Sense of Belonging” for international students is built around four pillars: peer-led learning, institutional pride, community engagement, and academic support. This connectedness journey helps students build lasting bonds, access wrap-around support, and strengthen their academic and community ties. Although students are often consulted, they seek deeper involvement in decisions impacting them. The panel underscored that supporting international students is a shared responsibility and encouraged institutions to place students at the heart of all engagement strategies.
The student panel discussion, Belonging Beyond Borders, explored international students’ journeys in WA. Dr Linda Yang mentioned that hosting the panel was a profound experience for her, evoking memories of her student days and reinforcing the importance of belonging. Key reflections included the need for educational institutions to foster inclusivity and create spaces for authentic connection. The discussion highlighted the importance of bridging cultural differences, promoting intentional integration, and encouraging friendships between international and domestic students to build a supportive campus community. The student panel was a highlight of the day, with the audience appreciating the student’s honest and engaging discussion of how they experience their sense of belonging living as international students in Australia.
Feedback on the day overwhelmingly agreed the content was timely, engaging, and applicable to their work.
