Applications have officially opened for the highly regarded John Monash Scholarship Program, one of Australia’s most generous postgraduate awards designed to support the nation’s future global leaders.
Offered by the General Sir John Monash Foundation, the scholarship provides recipients with up to $100,000 per year for up to three years of postgraduate study at leading international universities. The Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Ramadge, said the scholarship is aimed at Australians who are ready to make a global impact while building a stronger, more resilient nation at home.
“The John Monash Scholarship is for Australians ready to take on the world and gain the skills, knowledge and networks that will advance our nation,” Mr Ramadge said.
“Designed and continuously supported by Australians across every sector — government, business, academia and civil society — it’s one of the few scholarships that offers complete freedom to study any field, at any university, anywhere in the world.”
This year, the Foundation has raised the annual stipend to $100,000 in response to the rising cost of living, ensuring recipients can focus fully on their studies abroad. Scholarship values now range from $100,000 for a one-year Master’s degree to $300,000 for a three-year PhD or DPhil.
Two new named scholarships have also been introduced for 2025: the Jane Hansen and Paul Little John Monash Scholarship, and the Sir James McCusker John Monash Scholarship. Both have been made possible through the philanthropic contributions of Jane Hansen AO and Paul Little AO in Victoria, and Tonya and Malcolm McCusker in Western Australia.
Since its inception in 2004, the John Monash Scholarship has supported 282 scholars across a broad range of disciplines, including medicine, law, engineering, artificial intelligence, the arts, education and more.
In addition to financial support, scholars gain access to the Foundation’s Leadership Academy — a lifelong network offering mentorship, leadership development, and career guidance.
“It’s not just a scholarship — it’s a launchpad for a life of impact,” Mr Ramadge said. “Our scholars go on to shape global communities through service, innovation and excellence — the very qualities that defined General Sir John Monash himself.”
