Deakin University is celebrating 30 years of impactful engagement with India, marking the milestone as “In India, with India, for India”.
In 1994, Deakin was the first international university to establish a presence in India and since then it has invested over $A50 million in India.
“This has enabled building partnerships and pursuing research that makes a genuine impact”, said Deakin University Chancellor, John Stanhope AM. “With more than 25,000 successful alumni, 70 scholarships, and 150 research fellowships awarded to Indian students, Deakin has worked to advance the lives of students, their families, and in turn, their communities.”
Deakin has established four HUBs with institutional partners in India, contributing to realising India’s National Education Policy 2020 objective to achieve internationalisation of higher education in India. It also established the Deakin India Research Initiative in 2010 and has partnered with industry in India, among other things.
In 2024, Deakin established India’s first international branch campus of a foreign university, in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), initially offering postgraduate courses in cyber security and business analytics.
The three key elements that Deakin says defines its engagement with India are:
