In a field historically dominated by men, a group of exceptional women engineers is challenging the status quo and reshaping the landscape of STEM. From the early 20th century to the age of artificial intelligence, these trailblazers have left an indelible mark on the world, despite persistent underrepresentation.
Recent reports paint a sobering picture of gender disparity in engineering. According to the National Science Board’s 2023 data, women constitute just 16.5% of engineers in the United States. The situation is similarly bleak in the United Kingdom, where only 14% of engineers are women, as per Engineering UK’s 2023 report. In Australia, Engineers Australia’s 2022 Workforce Report indicates that women make up just 13.2% of the engineering workforce, despite representing 18.4% of engineering university enrolments. Alarmingly, only 8% of engineering technologists in Australia are women.
Globally, the UNESCO 2021 Science Report reveals that women account for fewer than 30% of STEM researchers worldwide, with engineering showing the lowest female participation across all scientific disciplines.
Despite these statistics, progress has been made. In the United States, women represented just 3% of engineers in 1970. Today, that number has climbed to nearly 17%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. However, challenges remain: a 2022 Harvard Business Review analysis found that 40% of women leave engineering mid-career—almost twice the rate of their male counterparts.
In Australia, positive trends are emerging. Female engineering enrolments rose from 14.8% in 2017 to 18.4% in 2021, though workplace representation still trails at 13.2%.
Against this backdrop, six women stand out for their groundbreaking achievements and dedication to the field:
- Kitty O’Brien Joyner (1916–1993) – Electrical & Aeronautical Engineering
Joyner made history in 1939 as the first woman to graduate from the University of Virginia’s engineering program. She overcame legal barriers to enter the field and later contributed to crucial research at NACA (now NASA), particularly in wind tunnel and supersonic flight studies, paving the way for modern aerospace advancements. - Madona S. Wambua – Software Engineering
From Nairobi to New York, Wambua’s journey exemplifies global STEM excellence. Inspired by aviation as a child, she became a software engineer and is now committed to increasing diversity in tech through mentorship and advocacy. - Patrizia Carpentier – Civil & Blast Engineering
After witnessing terrorist attacks in Istanbul, Carpentier devoted her career to designing blast-resistant structures. Her work has enhanced public safety worldwide by revolutionizing protective design in civil engineering. - Gozde Ustuner – Mechanical & Automotive Engineering
A leading voice in clean energy, Ustuner is advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology to support sustainable transportation. As both a professor and researcher, her focus is on decarbonizing vehicles and addressing climate challenges. - Ogechi Vivian Nwadiaru – Industrial Engineering
Based at UMass Amherst, Nwadiaru is pioneering energy storage solutions aimed at increasing access for low-income communities. Her work bridges engineering innovation with social equity. - Andressa Ojeda – Aerospace Engineering
Aspiring to become Brazil’s first female astronaut, Ojeda is also a passionate STEM advocate. Her outreach efforts inspire young students across Brazil to pursue careers in aerospace and beyond.
These engineers, from different eras and disciplines, share a common legacy of brilliance and perseverance. From Joyner’s fight for educational access in the 1930s to the cutting-edge AI work of engineers like Sherin Thomas today, their stories illustrate the transformative power of determination and vision.
The Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) is among the organisations supporting greater gender diversity in engineering. In a recent podcast titled “Women in Engineering,” EIT Deputy Dean Indumathi V and Dr. Arti Siddhpura, Senior Lecturer and Mechanical Engineering Course Coordinator, discussed their personal experiences, industry misconceptions, and strategies for overcoming barriers in the workplace.
Their insights offer valuable guidance for aspiring female engineers and underscore the importance of fostering inclusive environments in technical fields.
As these pioneering women continue to defy the odds, they not only reshape the field of engineering but also open doors for future generations. Their legacy is a testament to what is possible when talent, opportunity, and determination converge.
