Monash University and The University of Melbourne are in the top 20 most searched-for universities for studying abroad, according to a new study released by digital financial services provider, Remitly. Monash University ranked at number nine in the top ten and The University of Melbourne at 18th in the top 20 in the study, which reveals which institutions are most popular among international students.

To identify the most sought-after universities globally, the study analysed worldwide search data for over 380 universities across the globe for the previous 12 months, excluding searches from their respective home countries.

Harvard University tops the list, with 7.9 million global Google searches, followed by the University of Florida with 6 million searches in the past year. Stanford University rounds out the top three. US universities dominate the top 20, with 11 of the most searched for international universities, including seven in the top ten.

The other two non-US universities to make the top ten alongside Monash were in Belgium and Canada. Vrije Universiteit in Brussels ranked as the sixth most popular international university and the University of Toronto ranked in eighth place.

Surprisingly, only two UK universities made it into the top 20 most searched-for.  The University of Edinburgh ranking in 15th place with 1.7 million global searches and Oxford ranking in 17th place with 1.6 million searches.
