ApplyBoard Report: Student Demand for Studying in Australia Shifting Under New Policies

ApplyBoard has just released their latest report titled, “Australia’s International Education Sector Adapting Amid Policy Changes” – 20th February 2025.

The report highlights key trends, largely from the Australian Government datasets and government announcements. Highlights include:

  • ApplyBoard projects that 220,000 new Australian student visas will be granted in 2024/25, signalling a return to pre-pandemic levels following the “double cohort effect”.
  • Higher education accounted for nearly 75% of all student visas granted in early 2024/25, a significant rise from just over 50% two years ago, reinforcing Australia’s appeal for degree-level studies.
  • New student populations from Taiwan, South Korea, and China all grew by at least 20% in early 2024/25. Demand from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka is also rising, signalling strong recruitment opportunities.
  • Despite broader shifts, postgraduate visa grants are showing stability, underscoring Australia’s continued attractiveness for advanced degrees and research.

The report claims that while policy adjustments have influenced short-term student mobility, Australia remains a leading destination due to its strong post-graduation work opportunities, high-quality education system, and strategic focus on long-term growth. As 2024/25 sets a new baseline for international education, diversification and proactive recruitment efforts will be key drivers of success.

What hasn’t been commented on, is the Federal election due by end of May, which could have a significant impact on visa processing in the second half of the year. Start polishing your crystal balls!
