A recent high school immersion session in Melbourne has highlighted the value of structured international exchange, bringing together students from Japan and Australia in a shared environment focused on connection and cultural understanding.
Hosted by Ivanhoe Grammar School, widely regarded as one of Melbourne’s established and well-respected independent schools, the program welcomed 14 Japanese students for an “Australian High School Experience,” offering a well-rounded introduction to everyday school life.
Designed as a short, drop-in experience, the visit complemented the students’ structured English language studies at Universal English. This combination provided both formal learning and real-world application, allowing students to use English with greater confidence in an authentic school setting.
Students participated in a guided campus tour followed by structured engagement with local peers. By pairing students of similar age groups, the program encouraged natural interaction and meaningful exchange. The day was marked by enthusiasm, with students connecting through conversation, shared activities, and plenty of laughter.
Beyond the classroom, the experience was further enriched through homestay accommodation with local Australian families, arranged via OZiHOUSE Group. This extended the learning beyond formal tuition, offering students valuable opportunities to practise English in daily life while experiencing Australian culture in a welcoming home environment.
Special thanks go to Leisl Bruhn, Dean of International Students, as well as the broader management team at Ivanhoe Grammar School, for their commitment in delivering the program – particularly during the busy end-of-term period.
Reflecting on the visit, Ms Bruhn shared:
“It was wonderful to see both our students and the visiting group from Japan connect so naturally. There were smiles, laughter, and genuine curiosity on both sides.”
Programs like this demonstrate how thoughtfully designed short-term experiences can complement formal study, fostering not only language development, but also lasting friendships and genuine intercultural understanding.
