Birkbeck, University of London has appointed Professor Lawrence Pratchett as Provost of its Bengaluru campus, bringing more than three decades of international higher education experience to one of the UK university’s newest international ventures.
Pratchett has worked across Australia, the UK and India during a career spanning more than 30 years, including 15 years in executive leadership positions. He joins Birkbeck Bengaluru after serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Faculty Dean at the University of Canberra.
His appointment comes as international universities increasingly look to establish a more substantial physical presence in India, rather than relying solely on traditional offshore recruitment and partnership models.
For Birkbeck, the Bengaluru campus provides an opportunity to take its academic offering directly into one of India’s strongest technology and business markets.
Pratchett holds a PhD in Political Science and Government from De Montfort University and has extensive experience in transnational education. His previous work has included developing international ventures in Singapore and Bhutan, as well as leading international student recruitment and engagement across markets including India.
In his new role, Pratchett will provide strategic and academic leadership for Birkbeck Bengaluru, with responsibility spanning research-informed education, student success, industry engagement and international partnerships.
The campus is located at Sattva Tech Park in Whitefield, a major technology and business district in Bengaluru. Birkbeck says the campus will combine its academic standards with applied learning and industry engagement, with a particular focus on preparing graduates for an increasingly international employment market.
Professor Sally Wheeler OBE, Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck, University of London, said Pratchett’s combination of academic leadership, international education experience and entrepreneurial expertise would be valuable as the university establishes its presence in India.
Pratchett said the Bengaluru campus represented an opportunity to connect Birkbeck’s research-informed education with the city’s technology, business and innovation ecosystem.
“Bengaluru is one of the world’s most dynamic centres for technology, business and innovation,” he said, adding that he wanted to work with students, industry and education partners to build an academically ambitious institution.
The appointment also highlights the changing nature of transnational education in India.
India has long been one of the world’s largest sources of international students, including for Australian, UK and other key destinations. The next phase of the market is increasingly about bringing the institution to the student, through branch campuses, joint ventures and other forms of in-country delivery.
That creates a different set of challenges from conventional international recruitment. Universities need to understand local employers, regulatory settings, student expectations and the rapidly changing skills market while maintaining the academic standards and student experience associated with their home campuses.
Birkbeck Bengaluru is designed to allow students in India to study for University of London degrees under Birkbeck’s academic leadership and quality assurance framework.
Pratchett’s background in both institutional leadership and transnational education makes him a particularly relevant appointment as Birkbeck seeks to build that model in Bengaluru.
