The Senate has referred the provisions of the Universities Accord (Opening the Doors of Opportunity) Bill 2026 to the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee for inquiry.
As reported by Koala last week (TKN 290626), the Bill proposes two major reforms to Australia’s higher education system and establishes a legislative framework under which the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) would allocate international student places.
The Selection of Bills Committee gave the standard reason for the referral: to enable parliamentary scrutiny of the legislation.
Submissions to the inquiry close on 31 July 2026, with the Committee is due to report on 3 September 2026.
