A call for submissions has gone out for the AI in Education conference to be hosted at Flinders University in Adelaide on 28 October, 2023.
Titled “Shape the Future of AI in Education: Teaching and Learning,” the conference provides a platform for educators, researchers, and scholars to share impact, discuss ideas, and explore the potential of AI in the context of education.
Co-conference chair Mr Bert Verhoeven from the College of Business, Government and Law at Flinders University says of the conference, “In the face of AI-induced disruptions, there emerges a compelling opportunity to transition from an ‘assessment of learning’ paradigm to an ‘assessment for learning’ framework. As the global academic field undergoes rapid transformation, the inadequacies of traditional assessment mechanisms—such as question-based essays and reports—are becoming increasingly evident. While monitored examinations retain their importance for quality assurance, there is a growing pedagogical shift towards experiential learning.”
“This approach, which emphasizes hands-on, real-world skill development, presents a more AI-compatible alternative to the conventional lecture-tutorial-examination sequence. We advocate for a transition to authentic assessments that align with this experiential pedagogy, including but not limited to portfolios, project-based assignments, and simulated real-world tasks. While this resource-intensive methodology has the potential to challenge existing higher education business models, universities that dismiss or prohibit AI tools like ChatGPT may inadvertently undermine their own competitive edge in student admissions.”
“This paradigm shift offers a dual advantage: it not only allows future knowledge workers to excel in areas where AI is limited but also creates avenues for AI to augment human capabilities. Far from being a threat, the advent of AI should be construed as a catalyst for educational innovation, fostering a symbiotic interplay between human ingenuity and artificial intelligence.” He says.
Submissions should be extended 500 words abstracts for 15-minute Ted-style presentations, OR proposals for a 60-minute workshop showcasing AI in Education in practice. Submissions are only extended abstracts and/or workshop proposals. All submissions will be peer-reviewed.
The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the conference is 29 September, 2023.
