If the Coalition is elected at the upcoming federal election it will “work with major metropolitan universities to set stricter caps on foreign students to relieve stress on city rental markets”, according to Opposition leader, Peter Dutton.
Speaking in Melbourne yesterday at a rally launching the Coalition’s federal election campaign, Dutton accused Labor of opening the migration floodgates during its time in Government, “put[ting] pressure on housing, infrastructure and services”, and said that the “Coalition will take action”.
In his speech, Dutton also reconfirmed the already announced intention to cut the permanent migration program by 25 per cent for two years, from 185,000 to 140,000. This will move to 150,000 and 160,000 places in years three and four.
The Coalition will also impose a two-year ban on foreign investors and temporary residents purchasing existing Australian homes. Dutton says that this will free up more than 100,000 homes over five years.
At the rally, Dutton launched the publication Let’s Get Australia Back On Track: The priorities of a Dutton Coalition Government which specifically states that the Coalition will “Reduce the number of international students studying at metropolitan universities”.
