Overall, across all sectors, since introducing the new policies in October 2023, the Australian Government has granted close to 160,000 fewer student visas compared to the same period last year (-44%).
The most significant changes have been in student visas granted for VET (-73%) and ELICOS (-52%).
Across all sectors, students from India, Nepal, Colombia, and the Philippines have at least a decrease of 60% in student visas granted compared to the same period last year. All these countries are in the top 10 source markets for Australia.
It is also pertinent to see the effects of the policies on Australia’s reputation as a study destination. Some countries, like Thailand and Japan, now have similar grant rates, but the fear of visa rejection is already deterring students from these and other countries. This is very evident in the ELICOS sector.
Unfortunately, this trend will likely become more prominent with the recently announced increase in student visa fees.
