The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) is set to host its annual symposium on Friday, March 21, with a focus on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and its growing role in graduate skills and employability. The 2025 National Symposium on GenAI Graduate Skills and Employability will be an online event streamed live from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm (AEDT).
As GenAI becomes an essential tool in the modern workplace, the symposium will explore the evolving knowledge and skills expectations employers have for graduates. Unlike traditional discussions on GenAI, this event will emphasize how Australian higher education can equip students to meet these demands and thrive in the workforce.
Preparing Graduates for a GenAI-Driven Workforce
ATN Executive Director (Interim), Frank Coletta, highlighted the symposium’s unique approach, featuring perspectives from across the GenAI ecosystem and facilitated by both a current student and a recent graduate from ATN universities.
“The symposium is not your typical GenAI forum,” Coletta said. “It will provide comprehensive insights from industry, academia, and professional bodies, ensuring students are prepared for the workplace of the future.”
Dr. Michelle Perugini, CEO of UniSA Ventures and a renowned AI leader, will deliver the keynote address. With a PhD in Medicine and extensive experience in oncology research and AI entrepreneurship, Dr. Perugini has founded two global AI tech companies, one of which was acquired by EY in 2015.
Expert Panels and Key Topics
The symposium will feature expert panels from academia, industry, and accrediting bodies discussing how higher education must adapt to meet rising employer expectations. Key sessions include:
- GenAI Skills for the Workplace – Current and Future Needs
- Showcase: Preparing GenAI-Engaged Professionals
- GenAI’s Impact on Accreditation and Professional Standards
- Student-Led Hosting and University Representation
The event will be hosted by Elena Scullen-Howe (Bachelor of Laws student, Curtin University) and Guillaume Leroux (Master of Health Sciences Management graduate, UniSA). Attendees will hear from representatives of all ATN universities: Curtin University, Deakin University, RMIT University, The University of Newcastle, University of South Australia (UniSA), and University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
