The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) assists Australians understand and engage in international affairs; in partnership with the Japan Foundation they host the Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network.
This network builds capacity across the Indo-Pacific. The community brings together early-career professionals to progress a policy agenda; in 2024/25 this is disaster resilience.
Applications are open to join the AIIA Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network cohort for 2024/25.
This professional development opportunity supports education exchange relationships and knowledge uplift between Japanese and Australian professionals and the region broadly. Funded program places for successful applicants include;
- Study tour and round table scoping exercise in Japan
- Study tour and policy roundtable in a Pacific location
- Attendance at the AIIA national conference in Canberra
- Virtual meetings leading to a cohort publication and policy statement

The AIIA, involved in key debates of international relations, publishes the ‘Australian Journal of International Affairs’ and ‘Australia in World Affairs’. It also delivers occasional papers and ‘Australian Outlook’, an online publication featuring short articles and a summary of events in Australian foreign policy.
Organising exchange programs between Australian scholars, practitioners, officials, members, and overseas counterparts, AIIA also progress track 1.5 and 2 dialogue roundtables, deliver study tours and host overseas delegations. The institute send representatives to major international dialogues and provide scholarship funding for Australians conducting research overseas.
This chance to engage in ongoing research project with fieldwork and activities in Japan, Australia, and the Pacific will connect current and future regional leaders. The original cohort travelled to Japan, Australia, Fiji, and Tonga, to uncover collaborative solutions to regional challenges related to disaster resilience.
Participants will focus on the impact of multi-level government coordination, fragile ecosystems, the media, social cohesion, volunteerism, and intergenerational memory in crafting policy solutions, progressing research during the tours and meetings across Japan, Australia, and the South Pacific across 2024 and 2025 to produce a publication and policy recommendations. Attending the AIIA National Conference will connect them with the 2023/24 cohort to exchange knowledge on disaster resilience.
So AIIA invite early-career professionals to apply to participate in the network. It’s a limited cohort, with participants selected according to knowledge generation and regional uplift. To be eligible participants must;
- Reside in or be a citizen of Australia, Japan, or another country in the Indo-Pacific, notably the Pacific Islands, South East or South Asia, or the United States.
- Identify as an Early-Career Professional; having completed a tertiary degree in a relevant field within the past five to ten years with PhD researchers encouraged to apply.
The network supports professionals demonstrating leadership capacity and those with an interest in and commitment to disaster resilience and Indo-Pacific affairs. Worthy of investigation by the international education community, unsuccessful applicants will potentially be offered the chance to participate in other AIIA initiatives such as conference participation or separate study tours.
Priority is given to members of an AIIA state or territory branch. If you are not an AIIA member, you can join here.
Program applications close on May 30, 2024 and can be submitted here.
