The Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC), established in 1973, promotes the social sciences across the Asia-Pacific.
An accredited NGO with consultative and official links into UNESCO, AASSREC is a cluster of national social science research councils, academies, and institutes uplifting social sciences across the region.
AASSREC strives to;
- generate collaborative research among scholars in the region
- enable the exchange of scholarly publications and information among Asian social science institutions and individuals, and
- encourage exchange and visits among researchers and scholars from its member-countries and founding member organisations.
Applications are open for social scientists to apply for funding to support collaborative research activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

A list of AASSREC members is available here.
The grants are part of AASSREC’s Boosting Social Sciences and their Contribution to Better Lives across the Indo-Pacific program; a partnership between AASSREC and the Global Development Network (GDN), managed by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) and supported by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The objectives are to;
- enable international collaboration between early to mid-career social science researchers in the Asia-Pacific.
- support researcher collaboration as part of an existing or in development of new research.
As a member of the International Science Council, AASSREC unites bodies across the social and natural sciences to advance science as a global public good.
If you are a social science researcher within six years of your most recent postgraduate qualification and work at a university/research institute in the Asia Pacific, you may be interested in this AASSREC International Social Science Collaboration and Development Grant. Applications can include research across all social science research disciplines and cross-disciplinary research.
Program priority themes are;
- Climate change, sustainability and human mobility
- Public health and disaster response
- Technology and digital transformations
- Equity, gender, and indigeneity.
With human mobility a contemporary topic of interest and debate around migration and the link to international students high on the political agenda, these priority areas are acutely aligned to passionate conversations within the international education sector. This program is a wonderful example of uplifting the capability of Australian individuals and institutions to work with regional partners on issues impacting all nations across the region; taking the conversation around migration and international education to a wider audience.Grant funding guidelines are available here
