Startup to tackle international student Employment nexus

Stint, a newly created (2022) start-up by students at the University of Melbourne, is setting out to redefine the employment space by bringing international students and employers together via their community and job platform.

The Koala spoke with Stint Co-founder Nathan Lee. Lee is part of a team who are leading the charge including Enya Loo, Nicole Tjahyadi and Hui Hong Koh.

Lee says “Currently, over 780,000 international students currently study in Australia, but only 28% exercise their post-study work rights and 33% of international students who stay in Australia post-study are still unemployed six months after graduating. This is despite a national skills shortage, with 36% of occupations in shortage in 2023 and the technology sector needing an additional 60,000 ICT professionals by 2026. International students bring valuable benefits such as diverse perspectives, multilingual communication, and cultural fluency, yet remain an underutilised talent pool by Australian employers.”

“It is a community and job platform dedicated to improving international student employment outcomes in Australia. For international students, Stint streamlines their job search by exclusively listing jobs without Australian citizenship or PR requirements. For employers, Stint is a unique alternative to traditional job boards, where they can reach a niche candidate pool from 52+ countries, and 30+ Australian educational institutions, with 98% speaking multiple languages and 80% open to relocating for a job.” He says.

It’s an impressive start. Since its launch in 2022, Stint has supported over 3,800 students, gained over 10,000 social media followers, and impacted over 1,000 students through upskilling workshops. Recognised with the Startspace Future Founders Venture Scholarship and the City of Melbourne Open Innovation Competition award, Stint has successfully placed international students into companies like Kay & Burton Real Estate and the Melbourne Chinatown Association.

The Koala wishes Nathan, Enya, Nicole and Hui Hong well as they blaze a trail that requires attention.
