Cambridge English and Eaquals have joined forces in a landmark partnership designed to bring sustainability skills into language classrooms around the world. The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Cambridge on 24 November, pledging to make sustainability a core priority across Eaquals-accredited centres and training institutions globally.
Under the new agreement, Eaquals will adopt Cambridge’s Sustainability Framework for ELT—a practical, research-driven tool that helps teachers embed sustainability themes into everyday lessons. The framework supports educators to bring real-world issues into the classroom, empowering learners to develop the knowledge and habits needed to live responsibly and act as informed global citizens.
Francesca Woodward, Global Managing Director for English at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to shaping a better future. “It’s essential that future generations are equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to make a positive difference in the world… Our Sustainability Framework for ELT is a fantastic vehicle for this, and we’re excited to work with Eaquals to ensure even more people can benefit.”
Eaquals Executive Director Dr Lou McLaughlin said the collaboration strengthens the organisation’s mission to champion excellence and innovation in language education. “Language learning connects people, cultures, and ideas… Together, we can ensure that language education not only broadens understanding but also develops the competencies needed to build a more sustainable future and a compassionate world.”
The Sustainability Framework for ELT provides clear guidance on how teachers can integrate environmental, social, and economic themes into language learning in meaningful ways. It aims to help students become curious, ethical, and active participants in shaping a more sustainable future.
For the global English language teaching sector, this partnership signals a growing recognition of the vital role classrooms play in preparing learners for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
